For most people, summer equals fun in the sun, lazy afternoons, and beach trips. Corpus Christi has a few beautiful beaches of its own, so you won’t have to travel far to sink your toes in the sand. However, if you are planning to take a summer road trip, there are few things you should do to keep you and your passengers safe on Texas roadways.
Before you leave, schedule a multi-point inspection to ensure your vehicle is road ready. Your technician should inspect all the major components of your vehicle and complete any maintenance or repairs that are needed. The following is a checklist of things you should be sure of before you hit the road.
Oil Change – If you’re due for an oil change, make sure to get one before you leave town. Fresh oil will improve your vehicle performance and fuel efficiency and reduce the likelihood of a roadside malfunction.
Fluid Levels– You should also check the other fluids in your vehicle. Check your transmission, coolant, and wiper fluid and top them off if necessary.
Brake System – Check that your brake pads, rotors, and calipers are in good condition. If your brake pads are nearing the end of their lifespan, go ahead and replace them.
Wheels and Tires – Even if you plan to stay in town during the summer, you should pay close attention to your wheels and tires. The summer heat can cause the air in your tires to expand, meaning you may have to adjust the tire pressure regularly to make sure they’re properly inflated. While you’re checking the tire pressure, go ahead and check the tread depth of your tires as well. Your tread should be at least 2/32 of an inch on all tires. In addition, if you haven’t had your tires rotated or aligned recently it may be a good idea to do so before your big trip.
Air Conditioning– No one wants to be trapped in a hot car for hours during a Texas summer. To ensure your trip is a comfortable one, have your AC inspected and change your cabin air filter if needed.
In addition to these systems your technician should check your battery, wiper blades, and exterior lights.
Depending on where you’re traveling this summer, you may find yourself on long stretches of highway in between towns and cities. Make a list of everything you need to handle an emergency or just make your trip enjoyable. Below are a few of the things you should include.
Use these tips and you’ll be sure to have a fun and successful summer no matter where you go. If you need to schedule a vehicle inspection, book an appointment with the team here at Mike Shaw Kia.
