One of the biggest differences between the 2021 K5 and the 2021 Sonata is their power offerings. The base engine for the K5 is a turbocharged 1.6-liter that offers 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque while the base engine in the Sonata is a regular I4 with 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. The available engine for the 2021 K5 is a turbocharged 2.5-liter with a whopping 290 horsepower and 3311 pound-feet of torque with an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The available engine for the 2021 Sonata is actually the K5’s base engine – the 1.6-liter with 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque; there is not an upgrade available for the Sonata’s transmission. Automotive critics have also noted that the K5 handles with greater athleticism than the Sonata, lending to a more fun and engaging driving experience.
While these two cars have very similar feature offerings for their standard equipment (Apple CarPlay®, Android Auto, touchscreens), the K5 offers more space than the Sonata. There is more headroom and roomier seats in the front row and more legroom and roomier seats in the second row. The K5 and Sonata are tied for front legroom at 46.1-inches. The 2021 Kia K5 and 2021 Hyundai Sonata have very similar driver assistance lists with helpful features like forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, automatic high beams, and lane departure warning. These lists differ in that the K5 comes with a rear seat reminder to help you remember to remove precious cargo from the back seat while the Sonata has a driver drowsiness monitor to help keep you awake on long drives. Either way, you’re sure to feel safe and protected with the onboard driver assistance features.
