Spend The Weekend Camping On Padre Island

Even as school bells start to ring again, summer is still in full force here in Texas. If you want to get out and enjoy the warm weather by the water, Padre Island awaits just east of Corpus Christi with all kinds of seaside fun and convenient camping.

Fun in the Sun

Nature lovers, vacationers, and adventures of all sorts will find plenty to do along the sandy shores of Padre Island. The long stretches of beach promise plenty of space for swimming and sunbathing, and you can go beachcombing for shells and other treasures. The beach and laguna offer great fishing, and with more than 380 species of birds around the island, it’s a veritable bird watcher’s paradise. If you have a canoe or kayak, the island offers ample exploration, and you can rent boats on-site as well.

Island Campgrounds

With so much to do on Padre Island, you might want to stay for a whole weekend. Fortunately, there’s plenty of space for camping on the island, with campgrounds open all year long. Pick up a camping permit at an onsite kiosk, then head to your campsite to set up. At the Malaquite campground, each lot features a picnic table, while lots on the Gulf side also have grills and covered areas for shade. Situated near the Laguna Madre, the Bird Island Basin sites provide quick access to the coastline for kayaking, fishing, windsurfing, and other activities.

Primitive Camping Options

If you prefer truly connecting with the elements, the island has several primitive campsites where you can rough it. The North Beach site spans a mile of coastline, while the South Beach option covers 60 miles. If you choose to camp at the southern primitive site, it would be wise to come prepared with a four-wheel-drive vehicle, especially if you plan to venture beyond the first five miles in. If you have such a vehicle, you can also access the laguna from the Yarborough Pass campground.
