If your child is starting school for the first time this fall, you probably have a lot of unanswered questions lingering in your mind. It’s hard to know what to anticipate when everything is so new to you and your little one. There’s definitely a learning curve associated with being the parent of a kindergartener, but here are some basic tips we thought might help.

Get to Know People and Places

You’ll probably get a chance to meet your child’s teacher before the actual first day. But don’t stop there. Talk to the other parents at the Open House. Introduce your child to some of his or her classmates. If possible, meet the librarian, the art teacher, and as many other people as you can. The same goes for the facilities. Practice the walk to the classroom, lunchroom, bathroom, and playground. Spend a few minutes playing while you’re there to reinforce the fun aspect of kindergarten.

Get Organized

Well before the first day of school, make sure you’ve gathered everything your child will need (e.g. supplies, backpack, lunchbox, water bottle, nap mat, etc.). Label everything. Designate a place to keep these items so they’ll be easy to grab each morning. Set a morning routine and practice it before the first day. Also practice packing things up at night to be ready to go the next morning.

Emotionally Prepare

Start talking to your child early about what school is going to be like. Stay positive, but don’t dismiss any fears your child has. Instead try to relate and address each concern he or she has. If allowed, consider sending a special toy or photo to help your child feel safe that first day. Or plan to meet up with a friend beforehand so they can walk in together. Avoid talking to your child about your own feelings or anxieties, but do find a friend to talk to if you need support of your own.

Whatever you do, don’t blink. They’ll be heading off to college before you know it!
