We’re six days away from a brand new year and if you haven’t already, it’s time to jot down your New Year’s resolutions. If you have a few goals that carried over from the year before, don’t worry, so do most people. This year, follow these steps to help you make the most out of your resolution and see it through.

Set Reasonable Resolutions

Set yourself up for success by starting with the right goals. While its true that you should shoot for the stars, you should also break down your journey into reasonable, bite-size chunks that are manageable. The best strategy for achieving that is to set SMART goals — goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

Set Goals That Are Personal

Messaging through advertisements and media will tell you that you need to have a certain type of job, drive a certain car, or look a specific way. Setting goals based on these external pressures aren’t a good strategy. Your New Year’s resolution  should  be a goal that is personal and meaningful to you. You’re more likely to stick to your plans and do the work needed to reach your goals if they are rooted in your personal vision for your life.

Create a Plan

Don’t just set a goal. Make a plan as well. For each of your goals, take time to strategize the best way to achieve them. For instance, if you have financial goals, create a budget. If you want to spend more time with your family, make a schedule that includes things like family dinner and regular outings. If you have health goals, create meal plans and routines to help you reach them.

Adjust as Needed

Create check points throughout the year to reassess your goals and adjust them as needed. You might have unforeseen roadblocks that slow down your progress. Instead of letting that derail your plans, reconfigure your strategy and your expectations. On the other hand, you might reach your goals faster than you planned. Take a moment to celebrate the wins, then keep the momentum going by setting new goals.

These strategies can help you make the most of your New Year’s resolution, but before the year is over take a moment to celebrate all that you accomplished in 2022.
