Earth Day is right around the corner! The kids have started bringing home Earth Day crafts and having talks at school about ways to save the planet. You don’t want Earth Day to be something they only celebrate at school, but you have no idea how to celebrate it at home. A great way to celebrate Earth Day and get to know your local community is to organize a beach clean-up!

Identify a Clean-Up Site

In this case, we are talking about cleaning up a beach! As you may know, beaches go for miles. A good idea is to start small. So pick a portion of the beach, plan your route before cleaning, let your team of people know, and this way you get more accomplished in less time! Remember you can always extend your clean-up area as you make progress.

Choose a Leader

When you are organizing a beach clean-up, you need to put someone in charge. If you have large groups or teams of people it can be wise to designate team leaders. These people will oversee the teams or group, ensure everyone stays safe, enforce rules, and keep everything on track.

Gather your Supplies

The area of the beach you are cleaning up will determine what supplies you need. You may need large quantities of trash bags, gloves, a first aid kit, hand sanitizer, wipes, and a cooler for drinks to keep everyone hydrated on a hot day. You should also ask the volunteers to be prepared to bring sunscreen, bugs spray, and reusable gloves.

Plan how to Handle Recyclables

It may just be as easy as using separate trash bags for recyclable items and taking them to your local recycling plant. Although, sometimes with large amounts of people, it can be more complicated and you don’t want to be the person digging through the trash and sorting it at the end of the event. Reach out to local recyclers in your area and make arrangements to donate any glass, plastic, aluminum, and other valuable materials you may collect.
