Oil check

Spring is officially here. With spring comes a reminder that you need to take care of a few maintenance items related to your car. MoneyTalksNews has information on how you can prepare your car for spring with these 10 tips.

Take your car for a tire check

Nearly every car in America drives on all-season tires. While we may not have cold temperatures relative to other parts of the country during the winter, the summer weather is right around the corner. Be sure to have your tires inspected and rotated. Get the air pressure checked, too.

Replace your wiper blades

If you have ever had a windshield wiper peel off in the midst of a heavy spring rain then you know the importance of making sure your blades are in good condition. Blades that are starting to leave streaks on your windshield should be replaced.

Ensure your car’s brakes are checked

If you hear grinding sounds when you step on your brakes, they may need to be replaced. Even when there’s no indication of a problem, it’s always a good idea to get an inspection from an expert auto technician.

Clean the underbody

You may have a lot of pride in you car, and you want it to gleam in the sun. But as you wash and wax the body, don’t forget to clean the underbody, too. Spray water under your car or go to an automatic car wash.

Change the oil

Check your owner’s manual to see if your car requires thicker oil during the summer. If it does, now would be a good time to change it. Remember, changing your oil can ensure that your engine performs well and lasts longer.

Request checks of other fluids

Your car needs multiple fluids in order to function properly. Unfortunately, many people don’t realize that their fluids are low or dirty until those fluids fail and their car is damaged. Anytime your car is serviced, ask the technicians to check the fluids below. You may also want to ask them to check your belts and wires.

  • Power steering
  • Brake
  • Transmission
  • Windshield washer solvent
  • Antifreeze/coolant

Check your air conditioner

Here in south Texas, it can get hot. Be sure your air conditioner is working by running it for about 15 minutes once a month. Interestingly, this practice can actually make your air conditioner last longer. It ensures your system stays fresh and active.

Schedule a wheel alignment

It’s inevitable that you will hit a pothole, dip, or bump from time to time. When you do this, it can throw your wheels out of alignment. Wheels that are not aligned can cause stress on your car’s suspension, uneven tire wear, and other potentially dangerous issues. Make sure to stop by and have your tires aligned.

Change your cabin air filter

If your car begins to smell funny, it could be that the air filter in the car’s cabin needs to be changed. This is something you may be able to do yourself by following simple instructions. Expert technicians can take care of this very easily.

Check the battery

Car batteries can die anywhere and any time of the year. We suggest that you get a free battery check to make sure your battery is in good working order. This way, you can know whether you need a new one before your current one fails.
