Decorate Your Door This Fall With A DIY Wreath

Fall is just around the corner! This means it is time to break out your crafting materials and make a new wreath for your door this season. Sunset has the perfect DIY wreath for the harvest season that will have your door be the focal point of your fall decorations.

Gathering Materials

Having the right materials is important for wreath making. Deanna recommends that you measure your door to base your wreath size on. You might not want to make a bigger wreath or have the time to. Then, grab a grapevine wreath from a craft store. Having pruning snips, or sharp scissors, and floral wire on hand will speed the process up as well.

Picking Out Plants

Makenzie and Deanna chose a neutral color palette on purpose for this wreath. However, if you want more reds, oranges, and yellows of a traditional fall wreath–choose those colors. What matters is that you love the wreath and it reflects your style.

When it comes to the quantity of the plants, that will be based on the size of the wreath you have. However, buying more than you think you will need will be good for any mistakes that occur. You can use any leftover plants to make little arrangements around your house.

For the cost of plants, Deanna and Makenzie recommend that you could buy the plants with a friend and make wreaths together. Some plants you might be able to find locally and take cuttings of. Some items like strawflowers can be bought locally.

 Crafting the Wreath

When creating your wreath, you should start by placing the big branches first. To start building the shape of the wreath, make a crescent shape and a base for your focal point. This is when Makenzie places the pampas grass and lighter sage, moving up as she worked. A trick that Deanna and Makenzie did was use floral wires to create loose groupings. These groupings were used at the base of the grapevine. After this, Mackenzie continued to layer the focal point of the wreath with bigger pieces. She used dried mushrooms. After this, add an attention grabber, like a grouping of flowers. After that, there were just some finishing touches and the wreath was ready to be hung on the door!

Hairspray the Pampas Grass

If you are using pampas grass on your wreath as Deanna and Makenzie did, it is recommended that you spray it with hairspray. Without the hairspray, the pampas grass will shed everywhere. Hairspray will keep shedding down and keep your wreath looking beautiful all fall long.
